Sharon Gun Club History
Shooting sports enthusiasts have bee using this property since the late 1940’s. The combination of rolling hills with sandy cliff faces to serve as safe backstops make it a naturally safe shooting venue. Use of the site for organized shooting was formalized on October 11, 1957 when Lorne and Violet Marsh incorporated the Gun Club Sharon. They operated the club as a “pay as you play” public shooting range and lived upstairs in the current clubhouse. Sadly Lorne was killed in an earth moving equipment accident December 7, 1977. A group of then members led by 5 directors decided to form a private members club and purchase the property from Violet. On May 7, 1979 Sharon Recreation Properties (SRP) was formed as an asset holding company. It purchased the original 58-acre property with buildings on June 15, 1979 for $176,600. At that time 1000 shares priced at $250 were issued by SRP to fund the purchase. The 5 original directors naturally received shares 1 to 5. Sadly as of March 2009 only one of the original directors is still alive. However he still shoots here occasionally and attends our AGM’s. On August 28, 1979, the Sharon Gun Club was incorporated to manage the affairs of the club, allocate funds, hold AGM’s, appoint accountants etcetera. On September 26, 1986 SRP purchased the 8 acres of land at the northwest corner of Kennedy Road and Herald Road. Further SGC expansion occurred on July 31, 1989. SRP purchased 10 acres of land and the rental house located on Kennedy Road immediately north of the club. This was a tactical decision to reduce the potential for noise complaints. To finance this purchase, 562 shares of SRP stock were issued at a price of $1000 each. We owe a great deal to our founding board for their foresight and perseverance. Thanks to them we expect our club to be providing enjoyment for generations of shooters to come.
